Let Your Green Light Shine!

 Green Light Celebration Logo

Show your pride in The Last Green Valley by joining the Green Light Celebration January 14 to February 12, 2012.  We are asking everyone to show their support for our beautiful region with an adjustment to their usual lighting.  Change out your porch light with a green bulb.  Put a green candle in the window.  Or plan an outdoor display of green lights in your landscape.  Encourage your town to mount a public display of green lights.  TLGV encourages the use of low-energy lights like LED and CFL bulbs.

The Green Light Celebration is more than a chance to chase away the dark winter doldrums with the colors of spring.  It is also an economic development opportunity.

Together we can create a special event during those weeks, significant enough to promote tourism during what has traditionally been the worst season of the year for visitors.  In addition to a regional display of the distinctive green lights, businesses can use this promotion to offer "green light" specials - maybe a green plate menu item, a green-tini cocktail, or a green light sales event.  Let's turn our economy green. There is a myriad of possibilities!

Take photos of your green lights or those your visit, or tell us about a green light special you enjoyed!  Just send them to mail@tlgv.org and we'll post them on our website and Facebook page!

TLGV Rangers Programs

The new TLGV Ranger Program provides formal training to volunteers who act as representatives of the organization in outreach programs.  So far eight wonderful people have finished the training program and are currently assisting Chief Ranger Bill Reid (also director of outreach programs) to greet and engage people at events like Woodstock Fair, Celebrating Agriculture, the Arts & Crafts Festival at Roseland Cottage and other gatherings.  The TLGV Rangers will be available to make presentations to social and civic groups, as well.  It is our goal to make sure everyone knows about The Last Green Valley, Inc. and its vital work.  There are four interesting programs available:  The Last Green Valley - It's Where You Live, highlighting the unique qualities of The Last Green Valley; Connecting the Drops - Source to Sea Through The Last Green Valley, a visual paddle through the watershed; Notable and Notorious, an entertaining look a historical characters from The Last Green Valley; and On The Wild Side, exploring the flora and fauna of The Last Green Valley.

If you are a member of TLGV and interested in joining the Rangers, or if you belong to a civic or social organization and want to schedule a TLGV Ranger Program, please contact Chief Ranger Bill at Bill@tlgv.org.

Maple Sugaring Tour

Saturday, March 17, 2012, 10:00 a.m. - 12:00 noon

Town Line Tree Farm, 96 Weeks Road, Eastford, CT.

There is no charge for this program.

March in The Last Green Valley means maple sugar season is finally here and spring is coming soon.  Five year ago, our very first TLGV members program was with Steven and Karen Broderick at Town Line Farm and we are delighted they have invited us back again.  The program begins in the sugar bush that Steve has spent years carefully nurturing and developing.  Here he will explain the biology of maple sugar trees and how to tap them for optimal production.  We will walk to the sugar house to learn how the sap is boiled down to make syrup.  The program is followed by a sampling of fresh, warm syrup on ice cream.  Please contact Bill Reid for additional information and to sign up for the program:  860-774-3300 or Bill@tlgv.org.

Parade Committee and

 Walktober Committee Forming

Would you like to design and create TLGV's floats for the Holiday Dazzle Light Parade in Putnam next November?  This year we decorated the TLGV canoe and a kayak trailer with green lights and "paddled" the entire parade route of 1.9 miles.  More than 20,000 people attended the 10th anniversary event.  There were more, bigger and brighter floats.  So next year we really want to make a huge impact and reach out to this captive audience.  We have some ideas for floats and walking displays but would love to have our members join in the effort.  Please contact Charlene@tlgv.org or Bill@tlgv.org, or call 860-774-3300.  We are really going to be ready for 2012!

While Walktober 2011 has just ended a couple of months ago, we are already working on the 2012 program.  Michelle Bourgeois, TLGV Tourism Coordinator, has reconstituted the old Walking Weekend Committee and is looking for members who would like to develop new walk, bike or paddle experiences, encourage special events or assist in reaching out to our town and nonprofit partners.  TLGV is hoping to see many never-before offered walks for the new line up.  Please contact Michelle@tlgv.org or call her at 860-774-3300 to get involved.
