Deck the
Hulls with Boughs of Holly...
And paddle on over to the Water
Trails Steering Committee's Holiday Party on Tuesday, December 13,
2011, starting at 6:00 p.m. at J.D. Cooper's in Putnam,
CT.
Spread the word - everyone is
welcome to join us for some holiday cheer. Celebrate this year's
accomplishments and help us look forward to more paddling and water
trail improvements in 2012. TLGV will provide appetizers; you
are on your own for drinks and dinner.
Please RSVP by December 3 so we
can give J.D. Cooper's a head count. Email Lois@tlgv.org
or call Lois at 860-774-3300.

Get Involved!
Please join us
for the 10th Annual Northeast CT Holiday Dazzle Light Parade on
Sunday, November 27th, 5:00 p.m. in Putnam, CT. (Rain date
Sunday, December 4th).

Last year we
decorated the TLGV canoe with green lights and "paddled"
the entire parade route. This year we've signed up with two
floats for double the fun. Consider helping us decorate the
TLGV floats or be one of the parade walkers helping to spread the
word about The Last Green Valley. Parade walkers must be able
to walk at a brisk rate for 1.5 miles.
And, of course, TLGV Members are encouraged to come to
the parade, enjoy this wonderful event, and cheer loudly for The Last
Green Valley floats and walkers! Wear a green light, scarf or
hat!
** We need a pickup truck that is
able to tow a small boat trailer and hold a generator in the bed (no
cap on the back of the truck).
Contact Bill Reid A.S.A.P. for more details if
you are interested in helping with the floats, providing a
truck, or walking. Bill can be reached at
860-774-3300 or by e-mail at Bill@tlgv.org.

National Recreation Trail Application
We did it! Thanks to John
Monroe of the National Park Service RTCA Program, the Willimantic
River Alliance, and the support of many volunteers, we were able to
submit a National Recreation Trail (NRT) application for three
Willimantic River and four Quinebaug River segments. If
these new water trail segments are designated, our watershed will be
home to approximately 65 miles of National Recreation Trail.
The Willimantic River Water Trail provides more than 21
contiguous miles of paddling enjoyment and challenges between
Stafford Springs and Windham, Connecticut with only one short
portage. There are three major segments: the rapids &
quickwater of the narrow upper section, the flatwater impoundment
above Eagleville Lake Dam and the moderate current and flatwater down
to the Route 66 takeout just above the falls in Willimantic.
1) Stafford to Mansfield CT (13.7 miles of narrow rapids and
quickwater suitable for experienced paddlers).
2) Mansfield River Park to Eagleville Dam in Mansfield and Coventry
CT (1.4 miles of flatwater suitable for novice paddlers and
families).
3) Eagleville Dam to Columbia CT (6.7 miles of quickwater and
flatwater suitable to paddlers with some experience).
There are a total of six water trail segments on the Quinebaug River,
providing almost 45 miles of paddling:
1) Holland
Pond (Lake Siog) in Holland, MA, to East Brimfield Lake, E.
Brimfield, MA (4.6 miles) [Designated NRT in 2007]; 2) Paper Mill
Pond in Dudley, MA, to Fabyan, West Thompson, CT (5.5 miles);
3) Fabyan in West Thompson, CT to West Thompson Lake, W. Thompson, CT
(6.3 miles) [Designated NRT in 2011];
4) Simonzi Park in Putnam, CT, to Route 101 in Pomfret, CT (6.5
miles);
5) Brooklyn Riverside Park in Brooklyn, CT, upriver to Rogers Dam
(4.8 miles); and
6) Wayne R Lafreniere Canoe Launch in Killingly, CT, to the CT DEEP
Fish Hatchery in Plainfield, CT, Robert Manship Park in Canterbury,
CT, and Butts Bridge in Canterbury, CT (15.5 miles).
We are grateful for the support and property owner
signatures from the following:
U.S. Army Corps of Engineers
Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental
Protection
Connecticut Light and Power
Towns of: Brooklyn, Canterbury, Killingly,
Mansfield, Pomfret, Putnam, Stafford, Tolland, and Willington.
Thank you to everyone who participated in this project. We'll
let you know in the spring whether our application was successful!

Classifieds and Miscellaneous Notices
Canoes for
sale? Kayaks to swap? Looking for someone to share rides
and shuttles? Email Lois@tlgv.org
with your request and we'll post your submission here. TLGV
reserves the right to accept, edit or reject all submissions based
upon their compatibility with the mission of The Last Green
Valley. Preference will be given to submissions from our
members and partners.
This is not what we had in mind for the first post, but hopefully
Tim's boat will be safely recovered:
Kayak missing from 28 Union Point Road, Webster. Please contact
Tim Bell, tsbcpa@charter.net,
if you have any information regarding the missing kayak described as
follows: Type/make - Carolina by Perception. Color - dark
blue (not quite navy blue). Length - 14' or 14.5'. Went missing
sometime between Monday Halloween night 10/31/11 and Saturday morning
11/5/11. Most likely taken, since it did not blow into the lake
during the snow storm. Also worth noting, it was probably targeted as
there were 2 other kayaks not taken that were within 2 feet of the
Carolina that was taken.

See you on the water!
